Steering a Traditional Brake Systems Manufacturer Towards a Data-Driven Business Model

The Challenge

A global leader in the manufacture of railway braking systems aimed to transition into a data-driven business model amidst the digital transformation era. They possessed a wealth of data from integrated sensors in their products but were grappling with how to effectively monetize this extensive data and integrate it with their core offerings.

Our Approach

TechFlowState initiated a comprehensive approach starting with a quick alignment to the client's vision of integrating data services with product components. Utilizing our Data-Business-Model-Navigator tool, we facilitated workshops that led the client through potential data-driven business models, refining suitable ones and exploring their implications, including required investments and IT capabilities. Prototypes connected to test databases were presented to potential buyers at industry fairs, garnering valuable feedback that informed further iterations and refinements of the solution.

Outcome

TechFlowState delivered a pipeline of innovative business models, including three principal solutions with developed business cases proposed for board decision, and twelve additional ideas slated for further development and implementation. These solutions, centered around the integration of data services, marked a significant shift in mindset from traditional manufacturing to embrace evolving, data-driven business models, aligning diverse thoughts with a unified purpose towards the client’s overarching vision.
